MamaMancini owner to open Meatball Obsession

Move over, Meatball Shop. Daniel Mancini is about to launch a new eatery devoted to the Italian staple. Meatball Obsession, a walk-up window, will open at 510 Sixth Ave., near West 13th Street, at the end of March.

At least three other meatball joints have opened in New York since 2010, but Mr. Mancini is no newcomer to the craze. In 2007, he quit his job in fashion to create MamaMancini meatballs. Sold originally at Garden of Eden and Whole Foods in New York, they are now available in 12,000 stores. Meatball Obsession’s offerings will be prepared fresh, using the same recipe that Mr. Mancini learned from his grandmother. He plans to open kiosks at malls and airports later this year.

“Meatballs are trendy right now. I think at some point that could pop,” he said. But by keeping it “old-fashioned, simple and real,” his business will “last for a very long time,” he added.
